History of Navy Federal Credit Union
The history of NCFU traces back to 1933 when it was created as the Navy Department Employees’ Credit Union of the District of Columbia. At that time, only the employees of the Navy Department, who were also federal employees' labor union members and their family members, were allowed to join.
In 1947, the membership was expanded to all Navy employees in Washington DC. In 1954, the membership access increased to all Marine Corps and Navy officers regardless of geographic location. As a result, it became the biggest credit union in the world,
