Visa® Platinum Advantage Rewards Credit Card Review
The Visa® Platinum Advantage Rewards Credit Card is offered by the NASA Federal Credit Union and earns 1 reward point for each $1 spent on purchases. This card is an excellent choice for customers who want the benefits of a rewards card and are also looking for good approval odds with above average credit. Besides having an already low APR on purchases, in the first ninety days, there is an introductory APR on balance transfers. In addition, there is no annual fee and no fee for balance transfers, foreign transactions, or over-limit fees.
Visa® Platinum Advantage Rewards Credit Card: pros and cons
Pros: | Cons: |
---|---|
Earn Points with Every Purchase. This card earns a flat 1:1 ratio of dollars to points on all purchases. Additionally, there are several bonus reward opportunities available through select merchants. | Cash Advance Fee. Similar to many other credit cards, there’s a fee of 3% on all cash advances ($5 minimum). |
No Annual Fee. Cardholders aren’t required to pay an annual fee just to have this card. | Must Be a Credit Union Member. All applicants must be a member of the NASA Federal Credit Union to be eligible for this card. |
Introductory APR on Balance Transfers. There’s an 14.65% - 17.99% APR valid only on balance transfers made from non-NASA Federal Credit Union credit cards, and within the first 90 days based on creditworthiness and other factors. | Some Additional Fees. Despite not having some major fees, this card does still have fees including a $25 late payment and returned payment fees, and a $5 card replacement fee. |
No Foreign Transaction Fees. Use this card outside the US with confidence that there will be no extra charges. | Poor Cash Rewards Conversion. You can redeem rewards as a statement credit, but the $50 for 7,100 points and $100 for 14,200 points conversion isn’t very good. |
High credit limit potential. The maximum approval limit, based on creditworthiness, is $30,000. |
Rewards system in a nutshell
The Visa® Platinum Advantage Rewards credit card is a typical rewards offer with easy-to-earn points. A single reward point is accrued for every dollar spent on purchases, and additional bonus points may be earned on purchases from select online and in-store shopping and dining venues including REI, Saks Fifth Avenue, Morton’s Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory, and Nike.com.
Rewards points never expire and are redeemable on the Advantage Rewards website for electronics, gift cards, travel, merchandise, etc. For cash rewards, points can be redeemed as a statement credit in the amounts of $50 for 7,100 points and $100 for 14,200 points.
Although there are other rewards cards available with better features, the various options for earning points and redeeming for valuable rewards make this card worthy of consideration for customers with at least a good credit score.
Are there any other benefits?
The real strength of this card is in the rewards, but there are a few extra benefits that make this a strong card to have.
- Expanded rewards site – Points may be redeemed easily on the Platinum Advantage Rewards website for a wide variety of great options.
- Real-time account management – Account access, information, online payment options, and card-locking protection are available anytime through the online eBranch site or mobile banking app.
- Peace-of-mind protection – The card offers 24/7 emergency assistance, fraud protection, and extended warranty coverage.
Conclusion
Because the Visa® Platinum Advantage Rewards Card offers a highly competitive 14.65% - 17.99% APR on both regular purchases and balance transfers, this is a good rewards card to have. When you factor in the special introductory APR on balance transfers in the first 90 days it becomes a great credit card option. It is also noteworthy for the lack of an annual fee, balance transfer fee, and foreign transaction fee.
To be eligible for a Visa® Platinum Rewards credit card, you need to be a member of the NASA Federal Credit Union. To be a member, you need to open a savings account with the Union and keep a minimum $5 balance in the account to remain in good standing. Membership is available if you:
- Are an employee or retiree of Nasa Headquarters, any NASA facility, or the National Academy of Sciences.
- An employee or member of one of the 900 NASA FCU partner companies or associations.
- A relative or household member of a current NASA FCU member.
If none of these apply, NASA FCU will provide a complimentary one-year affiliated membership to the National Space Society that includes credit union membership benefits.
There are other rewards cards available, but the features of this card and the abundance of reward redemption options make this an excellent choice for interested cardholders.
