Rewards system in a nutshell

The Citi Prestige® Credit Card has generous travel rewards whereby you earn 5 points for every dollar you spend on restaurants and air travel. You also get 3 points for each dollar you spend towards hotels and cruises, plus a point for any dollar spent on other purchases. The points you earn do not expire.

How to redeem the points

There are many ways of redeeming the rewards points, that include:

  • Transfer to a partner airline - you can transfer your points to points or miles at a number of partner airlines at a 1:1 rate. Generally, you get the most cash value of your points by transferring them. Depending on a partner airline, ticket availability, etc., your cash value of one point can go beyond 1 cent. Most partner airlines are international carriers, which means you might not get much value if you mainly travel domestically.
  • Cash rewards - you can redeem your points as a statement credit, direct deposit, or a check. Each Citi ThankYou point is worth 0.5 cent when redeemed for cash.
  • Gift cards - you can get a gift card from many restaurants and retailers for at least $10, which is equivalent to 1000 ThankYou points.
  • Payment towards student loans and mortgages - the Citi ThankYou points can be used for paying mortgages and student loans. They will be converted at the rate of $0.01 per 1 ThankYou point.
  • Shopping with points - you can use the ThankYou points when shopping on some platforms or using certain payment methods like PayPal. The points are converted at less than 1 cent per point. You can also redeem the points towards gas purchases at BP/Amoco and Shell.
  • Transferring to another Citi ThankYou account - the ThankYou points can be transferred to another person's account. You can transfer up to 100 000 points, but they should be redeemed within 90 days, or else they expire.

Ways to maximize the rewards system

The Citi Prestige® cardholders can maximize their rewards by transferring their loyalty points, also called ThankYou points, to select partner airlines. Each point is equivalent to 1 mile with this type of transfer.

For example, 7400 ThankYou points can be transferred to 7400 TrueBlue points at JetBlue. 7400 TrueBlue points can buy a midweek late-night ticket from NY to Boston, which, if paid in cash, costs $124.

Who can benefit from getting the Citi Prestige® Credit Card?

The Citi Prestige® Credit Card is a good choice for people who frequently travel, especially internationally. You get 5x dining and air travel rewards, plus 3x rewards on hotels and cruises.

The card is packed with travel benefits: $250 annual travel credit, free hotel nights, TSA PreCheck or Global Entry $100 credit, complimentary access to Priority Pass lounges, and doesn’t charge any foreign transaction fees.

If you don’t travel abroad often, you might consider other travel cards since the only domestic airline you can transfer your Citi ThankYou points to is JetBlue.

The Citi Prestige® Credit Card has many benefits that include:

  • Citi Entertainment - get access to ticket presales or VIP packages to concerts, sporting events, and dining experiences.
