After exceeding the $6000 limit, you will earn a fixed cash back rate of 1%. Besides, you will also earn 3% cash back at select department stores and gas stations.
The supermarket list where you can get cash back on groceries exclude Superstores and Warehouse clubs such as Walmart®, Costco, and Target®. These stores do not qualify as supermarkets and only earn the 1% cash back.
The 3% cash back isn’t capped. However, supermarkets and superstores that sell gas aren’t considered gas stations. If you purchase gas at these stores, you only receive a 1% cash back.
The cash backs are in the form of reward dollars that can be redeemed for statement credits. At times, American Express may allow users to redeem the rewards in the form of merchandise or gift cards.

Conclusion
If you spend too much on groceries and gas, you are better off choosing cards with higher cash back rates, even if it means paying an annual fee. Also, the card has lower acceptance outside the US than Visa® and Mastercard®, and if you are an avid traveler, it may be unsuitable. The 2.7% foreign transaction fee is relatively higher as numerous competitors don’t impose such charges but still offer zero annual fee.
