The Platinum CardĀ® from American Express Review

Letā€™s talk about the Platinum CardĀ® from American Express and look into its pros and cons.

With this card, cardholders get numerous benefits and an attractive rewards system for a hefty annual fee of $695. Hotels and flights booked through AmEx or directly with airlines earn 5x points for each dollar spent, and all other purchases earn 1x points. Currently, thereā€™s an excellent welcome bonus of up to 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 in the first six months. Other features include premium perks, like lounge access at more than 1,300 airports.

The Platinum CardĀ® from American Express: pros and cons

Pros: Cons:
Exceptional travel rewards. With a rate of 5x points per dollar on hotel stays and flights booked through Amex and directly with airlines, this card has one of the best travel rewards programs. Over-the-top annual fee. Even though this is a premium travel card, the $695 annual fee is still a bit much. Only the most frequent travelers will be able to earn enough rewards to outweigh it.
Luxury travel benefits. The Platinum CardĀ® from American Express really stands out with its benefits. It offers cardholders $200 credit for hotel bookings, $200 credit for airline fees, access to over 1,300 airport lounges, savings on international flights, and many others. Restrictive benefits. We do not deny that the perks are significant, but theyā€™re still relatively inflexible. For example, the airline credit covers only incidental fees, and cardholders must select one qualifying airline, which they can change once a year.
Generous welcome offer. The 80,000-bonus points offer is one of the greatest on the market. Throw in the 10x points at restaurants and small shops, and you get a great incentive that new cardholders will appreciate.
No preset spending limit. Your spending limit will be determined by factors like payment, purchase, and credit history. This feature allows for great spending flexibility.
No foreign transaction fee. A valuable feature considering this is a travel card.

Rewards system in a nutshell

The rewards system of the Platinum CardĀ® from American Express has a great start with the 80,000-points worth welcome offer. These points could be worth up to $1,250, which is almost double the annual fee. Although the $6,000 spending requirement is relatively high, itā€™s reasonable for a 6-month period.

Since itā€™s a travel card, the main focus is on the travel rewards:

  • 5x points on prepaid hotel stays booked through AmexTravel.com
  • 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel
  • 1x point on everything else.

You must reserve and pay for a flight or accommodation with your card to get the rewards. There are a few exceptions from these categories, like private jet flights, hotel group reservations, tours, cruises, etc. You can find the complete list on the Amex Platinum Terms and Conditions.

There are plenty of redemption options, like paying with points, gift cards, redeem toward credit charges through Amex Travel, or you can transfer them to a frequent flyer program. You'll get the most value if you redeem for travel through Amex or with a transfer to a frequent flyer program. To find out the value of your points for different redemption options just use our helpful tool ā€“ Rewards Calculator. You can notice that the minimum redemption limit is 5,000 points.

Who can benefit from getting the Platinum CardĀ® from American Express?

Obviously, this is a travel card that will bring the most value only to the most avid travelers who value luxury perks. However, itā€™s important to take a good look at your spending before applying for this card. If it turns out you donā€™t spend enough to earn the rewards, youā€™ll end up not getting much value out of it.

Upscale customers wonā€™t have any problem with covering the annual fee, especially if they are regulars at an Equinox gym ($300 statement credit annually), frequently use Uber ($200 Uber Cash annually), or they shop at Saks Fifth Avenue (up to $100 in statement credits). If you add the $200 hotel credit, thatā€™s already $800, which is quite over the $695 annual fee. However, that means you'll have to spend a lot too. Equinox is a fancy fitness club, and the hotels eligible for the hotel credit are all very luxurious.

Also, for instance, if the 80,000 bonus points are used to book flights through Amex Travel, theyā€™d be worth $1,250 ā€“ covering almost two annual fees.

Now, if we consider only the rewards from bonus categories, by spending $8,000 yearly on flights and $6,000 on hotel stays, thatā€™s $700 per year if you redeem for flights through Amex Travel. So itā€™s already enough to offset the annual fee.

Finally, letā€™s not forget the lounge access that comes with this card and offers cardholders a far more pleasant trip. Lounges usually have free drinks and food and are a nice place to relax between flights. It's hard to put a price on that, but frequent travelers will find it very valuable.

Are there any other benefits?

A fancy travel card like this usually comes with quite a few benefits, and the Platinum CardĀ® from American Express does excellent on this point. Letā€™s look at some of the best additional benefits it offers:

  • Access to the Global Lounge Collection - this feature includes several lounge products (the Centurion and Escape Lounges) and some airline-operated lounges like the Delta Sky Club and Lufthansa lounges.
  • $240 Digital Entertainment Credit ā€“ Up to $20 per month in statement credits at the following partners: Peacock, the New York Times, Audible, and SiriusXM.
  • $189 with Clear ā€“ you can get up to $189 on your membership.
  • Fine Hotels and Resort Program ā€“ nice perks at partner hotels if you book through Amex Travel (things like breakfast for two, a late check-out, and many more).
  • Platinum Travel Service ā€“ counselors that provide itineraries and tailored recommendations.
  • Cell Phone Protection - if you pay your monthly mobile bill with your card, youā€™ll get cell phone protection. The coverage amount is $800 per approved claim, and you can have two approved claims per 12-month period.
  • Global Entry/TSA credit - You can get a $100 statement credit for Global Entry (one credit in 4 years ) or up to TSA $85 credit (one credit in 4.5 years).
  • Hilton Honors Gold Status and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status
  • $155 for Walmart+ membership - receive a statement credit for the Walmart + monthly membership fee.
  • Terms Apply.

Note that some of these benefits require enrollment in 3rd party programs.

Although all those above are the cherries-on-top, this card doesnā€™t lack some standard benefits either:

  • Secondary Car Rental Insurance
  • Trip Delay and Trip Cancellation Insurance
  • Purchase Protection
  • Extended Warranty

Conclusion

In a nutshell: we absolutely love Amex Platinumā€™s many fancy features that can make every cardholder feel special ā€“ starting from the great welcome bonus, the high rewards rates on travel, and up to the many, many exclusive perks. However, one thing where there's room for improvement is the $200 airline fee, which in our opinion should include more expenses if they want to be on the same level as the competition.

While itā€™s true that the annual fee is a bit on the high side, the rewards and benefits can make up for it. This card is designed for a particular target customer group, and only those that are entirely sure they'll spend enough and will make the most of it should apply.
