How to choose a credit card for your honeymoon?
If you just went through our list, your head is probably a mess – so many different cards! Don't panic, we've intentionally put up such a diverse credit card list because not every honeymoon and every couple are the same.
Let’s start from the beginning - your wedding. Are you planning to splash out and make it a BIG one, or do you just want it to be a small gathering? Either way is fine! So, if you’re planning to spend a lot, then why not snatch a fat bonus on the way? Some spending requirements are harder to reach otherwise but might be an easier goal if you charge all wedding purchases on your credit card. The Capital One Venture Rewards has a great 100,000 miles bonus if you spend $20,000 in the first year. Of course, you can then use those miles for your honeymoon. If you get a headache thinking about those wedding costs and want to save up money but still have a nice honeymoon credit card, consider one with 0% APR offers. The Chase Freedom Unlimited® offers you a 15-month interest-free period (20.49% - 29.24% Variable after that), and it is also a decent travel card.
After the most important night in your life is over, the next thing is to pop on that plane that'll get you to your honeymoon. If you two are fans of a particular airline and that's the one that must take you on your trip, you might want an airline credit card.
Such great cards are the United℠ Explorer, the Citi AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®, and Delta SkyMiles® Gold.
Same if you're loyal to some hotel chain, a hotel-branded credit card will be of great value to you, like the Hilton Honors credit cards. If you don't have any preferences regarding airlines or hotels but just want a flexible travel card, there are plenty of choices. If you don't mind paying an annual fee for a card that'll make you feel special and spoil you with elite treats and benefits, The Platinum Card® from American Express® and Citi Prestige® offer a great rewards value and fancy perks that make up for the big annual fees, $695 and $495 respectively.
Some nice travel cards with more affordable annual fees are the Chase Sapphire Preferred® ($95), the Capital One Venture Rewards ($95). The Capital One Venture Rewards has a no-annual-fee counterpart – the Capital One VentureOne Rewards.
Finally, let’s talk about the honeymoon activities you’ve planned, so you know better what extra features to look for in a card. If you’re thinking about having romantic dinners every night, the American Express® Gold Card (4 miles) and the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards cards (4% Savor Cash Rewards; 3% SavorOne Rewards) come with great rewards rates on dining. If you’ve planned a road trip honeymoon with a different adventure every day, consider cards that have gas stations as a bonus category. For example, the The Platinum Card® from American Express® (10x points), the EveryDay® Preferred American Express® (3x points), and the Blue Cash credit cards (3% Blue Cash Preferred®; 2% Blue Cash Everyday®). All these cards come with car rental insurance too.
If your credit score and financial situation allow for it, you can always go for two (or more) credit cards and combine them in a way that maximizes their value. However, if we had to choose the best card for a honeymoon, it would be the Chase Sapphire Preferred®. Besides offering great rewards and a sign-up bonus, it doesn't have a foreign transaction fee, and it comes with travel insurance. These two features are also very important for those who're planning an international honeymoon or want to be extra safe during their trip.
How to earn points and miles?
The point is a credit card can be very valuable if used the right way. By the 'right way,' we mean to pay your bills on time, watch out for rewards, use your credit card for every purchase, and take advantage of all the benefits it offers.
You'll earn the most points with the card that'll best fit your spending habits. If you're travelers and already planning your next trip after your honeymoon, go for a travel card. Is your wedding going to take place in a lovely restaurant? Consider cards that earn rewards on dining, like the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards (4%), the Chase Sapphire cards (2x points Sapphire Preferred®; 3x points Sapphire Reserve®), or the Chase Freedom Unlimited® (3%).
If you want to use your card for daily purchases and earn rewards on every swipe, consider cards like the Blue Cash cards (both Blue Cash Everyday® and Blue Cash Preferred®) and the American Express® EveryDay®.
What are the top cards for entertainment?
The top card for entertainment is the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards. It will earn you 4% cash back on entertainment purchases, and there are two great current offers – 4% cash back on popular streaming services and 8% cash back on Vivid Seats. In addition to this, you'll also get access to VIP event tickets, premium culinary experiences, and 24/7 concierge services. Your leisure time just got a bit more enjoyable!
Other great cards for entertainment are the Blue Cash Preferred® (3% on popular streaming services) and the Capital One SavorOne (3% cash back on entertainment and popular streaming services).
